The church of St. Barbara:
The church of St. Barbara is one of the oldest and the most remarkable
churches in Cairo. It is situated on the eastern part of the Babylon fort and
dates back to the 5th Century, though it was rebuilt around the 11th Century.
It was named after St. Barbara, who was born in the beginning of the 3rd
Century in Nicomedia in Asia Minor. She converted to Christianity and refused
to marry any of the aristocratic young men in Alexandria, devoting herself to
serving God. Her father was a Pagan, who continually tortured her, and then he
complained about her to the Roman governor Marcianus, who in turn severely
tortured her, but she resisted and refused to leave Christianity. Finally she
was killed, together with her companion Juliana.
Cairo Tower:
Being on the top of a city like Cairo that has a vast area that is full
of contradictions is quite an interesting experience. "This city looks
quite different from above than what one see from bellow", this famous
sentence was said by Adel Emam, one of the most famous Egyptian actors, in one
of his movies describing Cairo is quite expressive as the city looks quite
different from above, especially from the top of the Cairo Tower. Many tourists
from all over the world especially the Arabs visit the Cairo Tower when they
come to Egypt to enjoy the panoramic views the tower offers of the city of the
thousand minarets.
The tower consists of 16 floors which were built on a huge Aswan granite
base which the Pharos used to build fascinating temples and structures.
The Pyramid of Meidum:
Unfortunately this is one of the forgotten sites of Egypt. Rarely will
you find it included in the regular tourist itineraries, as most of the
visitors nowadays follow a very traditional and established itinerary, which
mainly includes Pyramid sites such as the Pyramids of Giza, and the Step
Pyramid of Sakkara! I have noticed, in the last few years, that some travel
agencies are starting to organize trips, to the Pyramid of Meidum and the
Pyramid of Dashur, in a one-day trip. Pyramid of maidoum
We just hope they keep doing this, as this Pyramid has a special magic!
In my opinion, a visit to this collapsed Pyramid is very worthwhile! It is one
of those sites that had, and still keeps, lots of secrets!!
Meidum Pyramid is located 65 Km to the south of Sakkara. To visit to it
you simply drive along the road that takes you to Sakkara, go pass that site,
and continue straight on for about an hour until you see the Pyramid. There is
another way to reach Meidum that is a little longer, but a lot faster. You take
the road to the Fayoum Oasis and then join the Assyut desert road. After about
77Km you will see the Pyramid on your left side. There is an admission fee of
25 LE.
Mosque of Al Refaie:
The mosque of Al Refaie' is considered one of the remarkable Islamic
structures in Cairo. The mosque is located in the Qala'a square in front of the
citadel just facing the great Mosque of Al Sultan Hassan. The Refaie Mosque was
embellished by Khoshiar, the mother of Khedive Ismail to be the mausoleum of
the royal family.
Mosque of Al Hakim:
Egypt is famous in particular for the diversity and multitude of its
Islamic monuments which were built through different eras. The building of
Islamic monuments in Egypt has started since the Moslems first opened Egypt in
641 AD. From this point on, Egypt has been ruled by many Islamic dynasties:
starting with the "Rashdin Caliphs", the Tulunids, the Fatimids, the
Ayyubids, the Mamluks, the Ottomans, and ending with rulers from the family of
Mohamed Ali.
Each of these periods had its own requirements and characteristics which
were clearly reflected on the shape, size, and style of the architecture.
Moreover, Each ruler tried his best to build structures that express the
features of the period he went through.
Mosque of Aḥmad ibn Ṭūlūn:
Huge and majestic red brick building complex built in 876 by the Turkish
governor of Egypt and Syria. It was built on the site of present-day Cairo and
includes a mosque surrounded by three outer ziyādahs, or courtyards. Much of
the decoration and design recalls the ʿAbbāsid architecture of Iraq. The
crenellated outside walls have merlons that are shaped and perforated in a
decorative pattern. The courtyards are lined with arcades of broad arches and
heavy pillars. In the mosque and the courtyard the arches are decorated with
elaborate designs in carved stucco. The roofed oratory of the mosque is divided
by pillars into five long aisles or naves originally ornamented with panels of
carved wood.
Sultan Hassan Mosque:

computer to form a full 360 degree panoramic view, surrounding the viewer both
horizontally and vertically.
Sabil-Kuttab of Katkhuda:
Sabil-Kuttab of Katkhuda is one of the most important monuments in the
old part of Islamic Cairo, Egypt. This building is an example of Ottoman and
Mamluk architecture mixed with Islamic architecture. It was built in 1744 by a
pioneer Egyptian architect, Katkhuda of Egypt. Some architects describe it as
"The treasure of Ottoman architecture.
